Buying Forever Stamps by the roll: how many your business needs

Published August 15, 2026 · Postal Asset Partners

Stamps are one of the few supplies a business can buy ahead at a discount with almost no risk of the product going bad. A Forever Stamp works at whatever the First-Class one-ounce rate is on the day you mail, so a roll bought this year still pays for a letter five years from now. The planning question is how many rolls to buy at once, because the price per stamp drops as the order grows.

The unit that matters: the 100-stamp roll

USPS Flag Design Forever Stamps come in rolls of 100. Everything in wholesale pricing is quoted per roll, so convert your annual mailing volume into rolls before you compare suppliers.

Quick math on common volumes:

Mail per weekMail per yearRolls per year
200 letters10,400104
500 letters26,000260
1,000 letters52,000520
5,000 letters260,0002,600

Price tiers reward commitment

Our current framework: $49.20 per roll from 100 rolls, $41.00 from 1,000 rolls, $32.80 from 5,000 rolls. Per stamp that is 49.2 cents, 41 cents, and 32.8 cents. The drop from the first tier to the last is about a third off, which is why buyers with steady volume often pull a full year, sometimes two, of postage into one order.

Worked example: 500 letters a week is 260 rolls a year. At the 100-to-999 tier that costs $12,792 for the year. Face value on those same 26,000 stamps, at whatever the current retail rate is, runs well above that. The exact saving depends on the rate in force when you compare, so look it up on usps.com and run your own numbers with your volume.

Storage is a smaller problem than people expect

A roll of 100 stamps is about the size of a short pencil. A year of postage for a 500-letter-a-week operation, 260 rolls, fits in a drawer with room left over. Half a million stamps fills a filing cabinet. This is not pallet-warehouse territory until you get into the millions, so the usual objection to buying ahead, "where would we put it", tends to dissolve on contact with a tape measure.

Do treat stamps like cash. Keep them in a locked cabinet, count them in on arrival, and restrict who has access. Discount postage is close to money and should be handled like it.

What to settle before you place the order

Availability shifts. Stock comes from liquidation lots, so a tier price only applies to what is physically on hand. Quote first, then commit.
